Ducati holds a special place in the superbike world of melt-your-retinas speed, and the introduction of the company’s new 1199 Panigale ensures that the Italian manufacturer won’t be giving up that spot any time soon. In addition to shedding 22 pounds from the curb weight of the 1198, the new Panigale cranks out 20 more horsepower than the old machine, as well. The Superquadro twin-cylinder engine generates 195 horsepower, which should be enough to propel the 361-pound machine to well past the brink of sanity. Ducati has been kind enough to roll in traction control as standard equipment, though anti-lock brakes are a stand-alone option.

The 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale also benefits from a monocoque frame and the first electronically adjustable suspension on any superbike anywhere. That’s not the only technology on board, though - a GPS-based data acquisition system will track your performance as you kick the Panigale around your favorite track. That little trick is a first for production motorcycles in general.

The package will set you back $17,995 for the base model, while S trim nudges the MSRP to $22,995. The top-of-the-line S Tricolore will fetch a more heart-stopping $27,995. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Misano circuit renamed in honor of Marco Simoncelli

The race track on Italy’s Adriatic coast known to most as Misano World Circuit will adopt a new name in tribute to the late motorcycle racer Marco Simoncelli.

Although Misano isn’t where Simoncelli lost his life - that tragedy unfolded at Sepang in Malaysia - he was known and loved as a local hero at the Italian track. That’s why its owners have announced that it is being named Marco Simoncelli International Circuit in his honor.

It’s a fitting tribute, and follows the recent decision of motorsport constructor Dallara to name its new IndyCar chassis DW12 in honor of the late Dan Wheldon.

Moto Guzzi celebrates 90 years with the California 90

Moto Guzzi turns 90 this year, and for 40 of those years, the company’s California model has epitomized the Italian cruiser. Moto Guzzi is finally winding down the California nameplate, but not before celebrating it with one last special edition: the California 90. Each wears a unique orange-and-white paint scheme cowhide saddle, with a 1930s-style tank logo inspired by the original Moto Guzzi script. In addition, every California 90 will carry an identification plaque and features a comfortable cowhide saddle.

Power is supplied by the 90-degree V-Twin engine that has become synonymous with Moto Guzzi, with 74 horsepower and 69 pound-feet of torque. Despite its classic appearance, the bike features advanced braking technology in the form of dual-floating discs pressed by two four-piston Brembo calipers up front. A two-piston Brembo piece takes care of the rear.

Moto Guzzi dealers will ask a pretty penny for this special edition bike; expect to pay $15,990 plus destination. Hit the jump for the press release.

The beautiful Italian track hosted today the MX1 and MX2 qualifying races and the first race of the last round of the UEM EMX-125 series. The almost 34 degrees registered today in Fermo did not stop Gautier Paulin and Tommy Searle to dominate their respective qualifying races and later on Simone Zecchina was proclaimed the 2011 UEM EMX-125 Champion after finishing fifth in today’s heat and having still one more race to go tomorrow. A crash in the USGP brought an early end to an otherwise promising weekend for Marco Simoncelli at Laguna Seca, which has seen him consistently on the coattails of the leading riders. Unfortunately the Italian rider lost front grip in turn eight at the Californian circuit and paid a heavy price.
